New CEO at The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment, Mr Mdlalose

The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment welcomes Mr Kwenza Mdlalose to the team as the new CEO.  He joined the team on Monday 05 June 2017.

Mdlalose is a seasoned executive professional with several years of background in the NGO/Civil Society Sector, he has more than 15 years’ experience in senior leadership positions, which includes working as a strategist with vast exposure in strategic management, business development, policy formulation, a champion of organisational development and change management as well as considerable youth development experience. He has led many organisations at CEO and COO level and is familiar with management of developmental aspects.

He has a Master of Public Management Degree in which he majored in Good Governance and Strategic Leadership and he is currently working on the Research Proposal for admission to study towards a Doctoral Degree / PHD in Executive Leadership.

Mdlalose’s vision as he joins TPA will be to continue on the journey that his predecessor undertook, which is to ensure that TPA now grows exponentially on the foundation that has been laid.  Furthermore Mdlalose will work towards ensuring that TPA becomes more visible and accessible to key stakeholders and communicates effectively with the youth of the nation to encourage them to embark on this life changing experience in order to instill confidence in them and improve their self-esteem.  Mdlalose is contactable at

Ms Lara Kruiskamp, the incumbent CEO, will be handing over to Mdlalose for the month of June and her last day at TPA will be Tuesday 4th July 2017.  Kruiskamp will be moving to Grahamtown in the Eastern Cape, to pursue her vision of Restore SA which includes building Lukhanyiso Village in association with LIV Village, to bring light and hope to the nation by Rescuing children; Restoring lives; Raising leaders and Releasing stars.   No doubt that when the children at Lukhanyiso Village are old enough, they will participate in The Award Programme.



About The President’s Award

The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment (TPA) is affiliated to The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award for Young People and is a full member of the International Award Foundation which oversees the Award Programme in over 140 countries globally, with 25 of these being in Africa, and a total of over one million active participants internationally.  TPA is a registered non-profit organisation (004-920NPO) with Public Benefit Organisation status, registered with SARS (PBO#930001329).

TPA motivates young people to develop character, discover their purpose and determine their future to contribute towards building a great South Africa.  The Award Programme targets 14-24 year olds across the socio-economic spectrum, from public and private schools, children’s homes, correctional services centres, universities, etc. A global framework for non-formal education has set guiding principles, outcomes for young people and impact measures.

Youth Participants progress at their own pace through three Award levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. There are four sections to the Programme for each level: 1. Skills Development; 2. Physical Recreation; 3. Service to the Community and; 4. an Adventurous Journey. In addition, a Residential Project is required for the Gold Award level. With guidance from volunteer adult Award Leaders, each young person builds confidence by reflecting upon their interests, abilities and ambitions to set themselves challenges.
